Mobile number portability (MNP) enables mobile phone users to retain their mobile phone numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another.

In India

Expected Date of Implementation: july 2010

To be implemented in the four metros and category-A circles and later to be rolled out in rest of the country

The regulator-DOT-has issued Letter Of Intent(LOI) to Syniverse Technologies and Telcordia Technologies on March-5'th 2009. As per LOI, these companies should start the services with in six month s of getting LOI(i.e Sep-2009).

Given the mobile number portability,is there a way to know if the number I am calling is on the same network as me or on a different one? In Italy, you have to add a code set by the Authority before the number you are calling at. Is it the same in UK? is it available for fixed lines too?

Wait for that. MNP is not yet out so nothing is clear.

In UK there were problems when MNP was launched. Callers thought they were calling to same n/w which was free but ended up paying huge bills.

Well I think every operator will launch a way to check whether the no you called is onnet or not. For eg in NZ ... Telecom mobile has a way where if you sms the no to a short code
it inturn reply if the no. is onnet or not.

u will loose existing balance & if ur friend has registered ur no. in family & friends he will also loose the benefit of free/discounted rates.
