Default Airtel to invest Rs 600-cr to ramp up networks in Northeast

GUWAHATI: Bharti Airtel will invest Rs 600-crore to ramp up its networks in the Assam and Northeast circles in 2009-10.

Announcing this here on Monday, Bharti Airtel joint managing director Manoj Kohli said : "About Rs 500 crore will be invested in network rollout and around Rs 100 crore in other associated activities in 2009-10. The company had spent a similar sum last fiscal."

Bharti Airtel’s cumulative investment in the twin circles since 2005 has been roughly Rs 1800 crore. Airtel will bolster its network and cover more highways, tourist hotspots and religious sites in Assam and across the Northeast," said Mr Kohli.

In this light, Mr Sudipto Chowdhury, Bharti Airtel COO (Northeast and Assam circles) said: We are planning to install around 700 towers this fiscal in the circles. At present, we have 3000 towers in Northeast."

Mobile penetration in the northeastern states is around 22 per cent. In Guwahati, the penetration is over 50 per cent while in the Mizoram capital Aizwal, it is as high as 89 per cent. We are also working with Oil India Ltd (OIL) and tea companies to provide data connectivity. We are investing in laying optical fibre. The traffic is all set to grow in future."
